#10YearsChallenge – What Was Life Like in 2009

Me in 2009 and Today in 2019! I have grown up!
#10YearsChallenge has overtaken Facebook and Instagram and honestly, I don’t really understand why, but somehow it seems like a nice thing to try o out.Besides, my 10 years difference picture, I also thought to talk about life in general, more precisely pop culture in 2009.
Currently, we’re living in the last year of this decade and soon 2000s fashion and music will be considered vintage.
Anyhow, 2009 was a pretty interesting year. While researching what to write here, I had stumbled upon this article which explains how much life has changed between 1999 and 2009. Both years, just like this one, are pretty important to me. I was born in 1999, turned 10 in 2009, and will turn 20 in 2019. Well, there are two more months left!
Today, I decided to cover several topics from the internet and social media, fashion trends, popular music, and general life from my perspective ten years ago.

1. Internet and social media

Perhaps the most intriguing subject to discuss is social media. In 2009, the most popular platform was, of course, Facebook, but there were also sites such as Friendster, Ning, MySpace, and Microsoft Live which we are active on at the moment.
Other websites that were recognizable ten years ago were Posterous, Bloglines, Maxthon, Perez Hilton, Cinematical, Recycle Now, Delicious, Last.fm, Flickr, and Wikileaks. Some of them are still going strong, while others are long forgotten. However, Twitter, Tumblr and Youtube are popular classics both in 2009 and 2019.
I remember I didn’t have any social media platforms back in 2009. I think I have only used my mother’s Facebook account here and there to play Facebook games, and among others, I was playing online Barbie and princess games. And today, I am active on Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and my own Facebook account. And yeah, I have this blog!

2. Fashion trends

In the last decade of 2000s, fashion was much calmer than during Paris Hilton days. Unlike then, in 2009 neutral colors became more popular with eye-catching fabrics such as sequins and feathers.
The biggest fashion trends of 2009 were leginngs, belted dresses, cardigan sweaters, extended shoulders, and silk scarves. Those hot topics are not so usual today.
Anyhow, boyfriend jeans, over-the-knee boots, ripped pants, and sequins are still fairly trendy fashion items even ten years later.
When it comes to me, I was only ten at the time so my fashion sense was non-existent. But it’s still fun to laugh at this, and does it really matter? I was a kid after all.
Just one of the examples of what I was wearing in 2009 lol

3. Pop and rock music

Although I prefer to talk about rock music in general, when it comes to highlighting a year, I have to go mainstream.
Some of the hottest stars in pop music ten years ago were Kanye West, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, Katy Perry, Jason Derulo, Jay-Z, P!nk, Shakira, Britney Spears, Rob Thomas, and Justin Bieber.
When it comes to bands, Nickelblack, 3OH!3, Kings of Leon, Zac Brown Band, and The Fray were featuring the pop charts.
However, one star has taken overtaken them all – Lady Gaga. Songs like “LoveGame”, “Poker face”, “Just Dance”, and “Paparazzi” were all in top 100 and that was the year Gaga was becoming a celebrity. Today, she is winning acting awards. I just love this woman.
I remember Lady Gaga was my favorite singer ten years ago. I was obsessed with Poker Face so much that although my knowledge of English was minimal back in the day, I knew all the lyrics!
The most popular genre in 2009 was dance while today hip hop is the highest on the pop charts.
In 2019, the most popular stars among others are Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, Lil Skies, XXXTentacion, Drake, Ed Sheeran, Halsey, and Dua Lipa. And the most popular genres at the moment are
A bit less on the pop charts, but still very popular rock bands of 2009 were Green Day, Alice in Chains, The Muse, Breaking Benjamin, Foo Figthers, 30 Seconds to Mars, and U2.

4. Movies and TV Shows

Some of the top grossing movies at the box offices in 2009 were; The Hangover, Avatar, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Up, Star Trek, Monsters Vs. Aliens, 2012, and Inglorious Bastards.
When it comes to the movies with the most awards, those were Mary and Max, The White Ribbon, Fantastic Mr. Fox, A Serious Man, Inglorious Basterds, I Am in Love, Avatar, and Coraline.
Back in those days, I was mostly watching animated movies so one of my favorites was definitely Coraline, as well as Up and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs. All other great films I had watched a few years later, in my teenage years.
Today, the movies that could win at the Academy Awards are; A Star is Born, A Quiet Place, Black Panther, Bohemian Rapsody, and Crazy Rich Asians.
In 2009 I didn’t watch many TV shows, but you probably did. The most popular realeases in 2009 were The Vampire Diaries (which I have fallen in love a couple years later), Castle, Glee, Navy CIS – Los Angeles, Parks and Recreation, Lie to Me, and Witches of Eastwick.
If we would compare to today, new shows still haven’t been released, but the seasons of shows that we are anticipating are the following; You , True Detective, The Handmaiden’s Tale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and definitely The Game of Thrones! We’ve been waiting for two years, the last season is going to be released on April 14, 2019.
Today we might have more things available online and more platforms to share our lives. Fashion is ever-changing and there is no set rule when it comes to style, it’s a more individual thing nowadays. Music is more listened on mobile apps like Spotify and Deezer, and TV and movies have been replaced Netflix.
However, 2009 for me as an individual was a much different year. I was only ten, going to 4th grade of primary school, doing basic kid stuff… I was playing online games and hanging out with friends in the neighborhood, everything seemed a bit simpler.Today, I am almost twenty and I’m sorting my life out. Soon to live abroad and attend college there. Still, I love my life. I think it is fast-paced and rather interesting. I cannot stand still, I love moving and exploring new places.Did you share your #10YearsChallenge picture?
